The future of the Flames goaltending

The future for goaltending looks good for the Flames. They can definitely be more confident than the Oilers. Not only do they have solid goalies coming up to possibly be elite starters, they have decent goalies right now that got them into the playoffs. The Flames, have multiple goalies in the system, Mason McDonald, Joni Ortio, Jon Gillies, all goalies who have potential to become starters. The Flames have had a tendency to draft well, their scouts have the good eye for talent and choose the players they feel will grow into good mature strong players.

SCOUTING REPORT

Assets: Is an extremely positional netminder with great size. Excels in high-pressure games. Possesses quick lateral movement and plenty of confidence in his butterfly style. Shakes off bad goals (and games) well.

Flaws: Tends to be badly exposed when his positioning fails him. Gets beaten upstairs when he goes down to his knees too early. Has had to deal with vertigo issues in the past, though he appears to be over them now.

Career Potential: Quality starting goaltender.

SCOUTING REPORT

Assets: Is supremely talented with enough size for the National Hockey League, and he has already displayed the durability and stamina needed to be a No. 1 goaltender.

Flaws: Must continue to learn North American shooters’ tendencies, as well as continue to make adjustments away from the Finnish Liiga. Also needs to play with more consistency.

Career Potential: Talented goaltender with good upside.

AHL, Adirondack Flames

Brad Thiessen • #35 • G Status:Off season

SCOUTING REPORT

Assets: Is sound technically and boasts a very calm demeanor. Has proven capable of dominating lower levels.

Flaws: Doesn’t have ideal size for the goaltending position, so he can be beaten upstairs. Stamina can also be an issue.

Career Potential: Depth goaltender.

Jon Gillies • #82 • G Status:Off season

Ht/Wt:6’5″, 216 lbs.

Born:Jan 22, 1994 (21 yrs) in Concord, NH

Experience:0 years

Drafted:Drafted by Calgary in 2012 (3/75).

SCOUTING REPORT

Assets: A huge goalkeeper who can cover up a lot of the net with his body, he is also as cool as a cucumber under pressure (and displays the ideal mentality for the goaltending position).

Flaws: Needs to learn professional shooters’ tendencies and prove he can handle a heavy workload at the highest level in order to maximize his vast potential in the National Hockey League.

Career Potential: Huge, talented goaltender with big upside.

Mason McDonald • #72 • G Status:Off season

Ht/Wt:6’4″, 178 lbs.

Born:Apr 23, 1996 (19 yrs) in Halifax, N.S.

Experience:0 years

Drafted:Drafted by Calgary in 2014 (2/34).

SCOUTING REPORT

Assets: Has a very tall frame, so size will be a major asset going forward. His glove hand is excellent. Catches right-handed, so he instantly holds a bit of an edge over his opponents for that.

Flaws: Gets into trouble because he goes down on his knees a bit too much (and too early) at times, so he needs to trust his 6-4 frame a little more in order to maximize his potential.

Career Potential: Lanky, talented goaltender with good upside.
