Could we see Kessel, Malkin, or Nash in Calgary next season?

Evgeni Malkin

Evgeni-Malkin-evgeni-malkin-16972788-600-400

He is expensive but is worth it. We have never seen him play without Crosby over his shoulder. He could be elite. We are looking at maybe somewhere along the lines of an Alexander Ovechkin but with more of a playmaking ability. Malkin, in my opinion needs to go out and find a team where he is the star, not Crosby. He has been under Crosby’s shadow for too long and it’s about team he takes over a team and makes it his own. He could work in Calgary; He’s physical, and he knows how to play a team game. Sure, his contract might be big and expensive, but with Malkin in Calgary, that would be something spectacular.

As of late there is a lot of speculation about trade rumours and some big names are being thrown out there. Phil Kessel, who has been the best player for the Toronto Maple Leafs for the past couple of seasons. And Evgeni Malkin, who has been under Sidney Crosby’s shadow in Pittsburgh. Rick Nash has been another name thrown out there from the New York Rangers. They have hit an occurrence that their cap situation is real bad. Rick Nash would be the guy to go if changes were to be made. Ultimately, both are unhappy, and most likely want to be traded.

SCOUTING REPORT
Assets: Racks up points as well as anyone in the NHL when on his game. Has the ability to keep the puck on a string and sift through defenders. Is a monster talent that can play any forward position. Elevates his game when it matters most.
Flaws: Can struggle on face-offs. Isn’t as dominant when he plays either wing position, since he is denied the puck more often along the wall. Takes bad penalties and is a little careless with the puck in the defensive zone.
Career Potential: Elite playmaker and scoring center.

Phil Kessel

kessel_phil640

Phil Kessel is an elite sniper who could possibly work in Calgary if the attitude changed. He was selfish in Toronto because he didn’t believe in his teammates. Calgary would be different. He would have to learn to play the team game and I think he could be an addition that could really work. He is an all-star calibre player who needs to find a click and a new team.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman is reporting that several teams have called the Maple Leafs to see if they are willing to part ways with Phil Kessel. Friedman also added that if a deal does happen, it will probably be in a couple of weeks. Toronto’s rebuild has been well documented, and trading Kessel will just make it even more real. The Leafs will likely be looking for good draft picks and young players for Kessel’s services. The 27-year-old had 25 goals and 36 assists in 82 games, and he carries an $8 million cap hit.

SCOUTING REPORT
Assets: Has one of the quickest releases of any scorer in the game. Owns quick feet, explosive skating ability and a howitzer of a shot. A pure goal-scorer, he’s elusive and can dangle really well. Can win face-offs too, if need be.
Flaws: At times, he could stand to be more creative on offense–he can fall into stickhandling trances, overplaying the puck and forgetting to use his linemates. Overall, his play without the puck and defensive ability aren’t great.
Career Potential: Elite sniper.

Rick Nash

NASH_QandA_ASG_672

I think Nash could be a good fit for the Flames, he is a big power forward who can score. He is a veteran presence, and if the Flames were to go on another playoff run he could help them in the experience department. Rick Nash did not really click too well in New York, I think Calgary could be a possible destination if the Flames wanted him.

There is growing speculation that the New York Rangers may seek to trade leading scorer Rick Nash this off-season.
With the cap expected to rise to only about just north of $71M, and the Rangers being $9.5M from the cap ceiling, they may view Nash’s $7.9M cap hit the next three seasons too burdensome. Forwards Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin, JT Miller, and Jesper Fast are all RFA’s come July 1st, and with Nash’s mere eight goals and 24 points over the past two postseasons, the 30 year old may be ripe for being dealt. His full No-Movement Clause becomes a Modified Trade Clause come July 1st, giving the Rangers 10-12 teams to work with. Some may include Washington, Anaheim, Edmonton, and Florida as they each have at least $16.7M in cap space.

SCOUTING REPORT
Assets: Has outstanding goal-scoring instincts and a huge frame, which he uses to keep puck control. Also skates amazingly well for his size. Can dominate a game with his athletic ability. Can also play either wing position.
Flaws: Can go into scoring droughts, quite often when he tries to do too much on his own–instead of trusting his teammates. Is still a little lacking in his play without the puck and he isn’t a natural playmaker.
Career Potential: Elite scoring winger.
