With the trade deadline approaching, I think the Penguins will be buyers as they should look for a depth Forward and/or a depth
Possibilities for defensmen would be Kris Russell from Calgary, Roman Polak from Toronto and also Anaheim’s Sami Vatanen.
Kris Russell broke an NHL record last year with 274 blocked shots, he also had 15 in one game. As of this season, Russell has 4 goals and 15 points in 51 games with the Flames, while also accumulating a -4 in the +/- category. His contract is ending this year, and has a Cap hit of approximately 2,6million $, which is not so bad for a number 4 defenseman. I think he would be a good fit to play alongside Daley, since Daley likes to move up into the play while Russell, while still moving the puck very well, excels in his own zone, since he blocks so many shot. He could also quarterback the second PP unit.
On the other hand, I really like Roman Polak, I think he doesn’t get enough credit for everything he does for the Leafs. He is a physical, big bodied d-man that is excellent at keeping the puck out of his net. I honestly think he is as good, if not better, than Rob Scuderi when the penguins won their last cup. Like big ol’ Scuds, Polak will sacrifice his body and throw himself in front of shots. He is also very good with his stick. Polak has 12 points in 52 games this season while accumulating a +8 which is very good considering how bad the leafs have been doing this year. While Polak Lacks of offensive skills, he makes up with his good stick and big body. Polak’s contract is also ending after this season, and has a cap hit of 2,7m $.
Another player I wanna talk about is Anaheim’s young defenseman Sami Vatanen. The 24 year old will be making 1,2 million this season, but will also need a new contract next season. Vatanen is a young, offensive d-man that has had a breakout season so far this year. He has 6 goals and 26 points in 54 games with the Ducks this season.
