With the NHL Trade Deadline only a week away, we have the first trade since the blockbuster that sent Dion Phaneuf to the Senators. Coincidentally the Leafs were involved again.
The Colorado Avalanche have acquired forward Shawn Matthias from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Colin Smith and a 4th-round pick in 2016.
Matthias, who turned 28 on Friday, has 17 points and 6 goals in 51 games this year with the Leafs. At 6″4 223lbs, Matthias brings a solid two-way game and big frame to the Avalanche’s bottom-6 forward group.
In return the Leafs we’re given 22 year old Colin Smith. In 54 games with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL, he has 13 goals and 34 points. Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello said that Smith brings depth down the middle to the Toronto Marlies.
This trade is good for both sides as Colorado gains some veteran experience along with size up front. The Leafs gain a young depth player along with a draft pick.
