The Calgary Flames started their trade deadline today by swapping centre Markus Granlund with the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Hunter Shinkaruk.
Shinkaruk, 21, was drafted in the first round, 24th overall by the Canucks in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He has spent almost all year with the Utica Comets of the AHL. In 45 games he has 21 goals and 39 points. He played one game with Vancouver. He will report to the Flames AHL affiliate team the Stockton Heat.
Granlund, 22, the younger brother of Minnesota Wild centre Mikael Granlund has spent the majority of his time with the Flames, scoring 4 goals in 31 games. Markus was drafted by Calgary in 2011 in the second round. He also spent some time in the AHL with the Stockton Heat where he recorded 9 points in 12 games.
With this trade, the Flames now have 4, 2013 1st round picks in their organization. Sean Monahan (6th overall), Emile Poirier (22nd overall), Morgan Klimchuk (28th overall) and newly acquired Hunter Shinkaruk (22nd overall).
