Can the Blues afford to keep Backes?

When the time rolls around this offseason, do the Blues have enough room for their captain David Backes? He will likely want a raise from his $4.75M cap hit, and the Blues might not have enough to get him signed long term. Jaden Schwartz is an RFA after this season, likely looking for a raise also.
Although, when Carl Gunnarsson, Troy Brouwer, and Steve Ott all come off the Cap it clears about $9.2M in space. Whether they decide to keep any of those guys, I’m not sure. Will they go after signing Schwartz first? He is younger, with more upside potential.
The Blues right now, have about $26.75M guaranteed to their forward core till 2017/18 or later.
  • Tarasenko – $7.5M
  • Stastny – $7M
  • Steen – $5.8M
  • Berglund – $3.7M

They have about $16.1M gone to defensemen until 2017/18 or longer.

  • Pietrangelo – $6.5M
  • Bouwmeester – $5.4M
  • Shattenkirk – $4.25M

Will Doug Armstrong find the money to sign Backes long-term?

Scouting Report
Assets: Plays a great shutdown role and two-way game. Has size, hockey sense, a nose for the net and plenty of grit and determination. Is a tremendous body checker. Can play both center and wing.
Flaws: Sometimes, he is too aggressive and gets caught out of position or takes bad penalties. His scoring lacks consistency, though he has improved in all areas of the game over time.
Career Potential: Versatile veteran shutdown forward.
