Oilers Set to Take on Jets in Heritage Classic

It is expected to be announced Sunday March 6th that the Heritage Classic will be played between the Winnipeg Jets and the Edmonton Oilers. This marks the second time Edmonton has participated in the event since the inaugural classic on November 22, 2003. For Winnipeg this will be the first time it will participate in the event.

This game reignites a rivalry from the early WHA days when the Oilers and Jets squared off in the last ever Avco cup with the Jets winning in 6 games. The rivalry reunited in the 80’s as the Oilers and Jets met in the playoffs six times during that decade with Edmonton going 6-0 in that stretch. This classic promises to be a physical and exciting game as more recently the Oilers/Jets rivalry has gotten more and more heated with fights being a common occurrence.

The jerseys for each team will most likely be modernizations of previous jerseys. I believe both teams should go back to the original WHA jerseys as both already have done retro jerseys in the past based on their old NHL silks. I think they should herald back to these jerseys here:

Winnipeg:

Both of these jerseys hail back to the team’s WHA roots and could look very good if modernized. I believe this will be a great game for the league and could generate lots of revenue and fans for both sides. All in all these are exciting times for Oilers fans and hopefully the hype train next season keeps on chugging at full speed.
