Sabres sign Ristolainen to a six-year, $32.4M contract

The Buffalo Sabres have signed RFA defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen right in time for the regular season.

It was announced on Tuesday, the six-year $32.4 million contract, that ensures Buffalo’s #1 dman will see the beginning of the regular season. Ristolainen’s rights were retained by the Sabres in June.

He is a pivotal blueliner, and will man the powerplay for the Sabres. The 21-year-old Ristolainen has become Buffalo’s top defenceman in just three seasons he’s been there since being selected in the first round in 2013.

Last season, Ristolainen lead the team in averaging more than 25 minutes of ice time per game, and led Buffalo defencemen with 41 points (9 goals, 32 assists)

Fantasy-wise he is a great pick. He plays a ton of minutes and all of the big time situations for the Sabres. Always on the powerplay and plays top-line minutes every night. His 41 points last season aren’t bad for a fantasy defenceman either, and can only go up from here on out. New contract, new goals.

Look out for Rasmus Ristolainen this season, as well as the Buffalo Sabres; my pick for the dark horse of the NHL this season.
