Finally, after three pointless games to start the season, Matt Duchene got on the box score. Quite a good night for the talented centre as well, putting up three points. Duchene erupted for two goals on three shots, an assist and a plus-3 rating during Thursday’s 4-0 win against Tampa Bay.
This Colorado team is full of young talent. Not only are they fast, but mostly shifted towards the offensive side of the game. Under Jared Bednar we haven’t seen Duchene play as good as we did last night.
The 25-year-old Duchene has been rock solid for seven seasons in a row, after being selected 3rd overall in 2009 by the Avalanche.
Fantasy owners have expected more from Duchene than what he’s delivered to this point, as the 2009 third-overall pick has failed to hit 60 points in consecutive seasons, falling short of his superstar billing. On the bright side, he did score a career-high 30 goals last season, but his assist total declined to a three-year low of 29, so he wasn’t even close to the nearly point-per-game pace we saw in 2012-13 and 2013-14. Still, there’s plenty to like about Duchene heading into his age-25 season, especially with the continually developing Nathan MacKinnon around to draw the attention of the opposition’s best checkers. After all, Duchene’s got all the talent in the world and a strong crew of wingers in the Avs’ top six. Look for him to successfully crack 60 points this time, with his usual potential for much more, as the most dynamic and electrifying offensive weapon in Colorado.
