ST. LOUIS – The Blues will send defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk and goaltender Phoenix Copley to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a first round 2017 draft pick, a conditional second round 2018 draft pick, and forwards Brad Malone and Zach Sanford.
Over 26 games with Washington this season, Sanford has three points (2 G, 1 A). He’s also spent time with the Capitals’ AHL affiliate Hershey Bears, where he has tallied 16 points (11 G, 5 A) over 25 games. The 22-year-old posted 63 points in 79 games for Boston College. Sanford was a second round pick for the Capitals in 2013 (61 overall).

The Blues best point-producing and special teams defenseman so far this year (11 goals, 31 assists), Shattenkirk will depart having played 425 games wearing the Bluenote, the 10th most by any defensman in franchise history. Shattenkirk was a first round pick of the Colorado Avalanche back in 2007. In his career with both Colorado and St. Louis, Shattenkirk accumulated 284 points (66 G, 288 A) over 7 total seasons.
Shattenkirk has not signed a long-term contract with Washington, meaning that he is still eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
